UK Special Envoy Says Afghanistan Can Only Progress Through Engagement and Inclusive Dialogue

Kokcha News Agency – The British government recently appointed Richard Lanzy as its Special Representative for Afghanistan. Lanzy recently traveled to Kabul and spoke with Taliban officials about bilateral relations and the current situation in the country.

The UK Special Representative announced after returning to his country: “During my trip to Kabul, I met with a wide range of Afghans, including Taliban ministers, and we discussed issues such as health and deportees from Iran and Pakistan.”

The British diplomat emphasized that Afghanistan will only progress through inclusive dialogue and engagement.

Mr. Lanzy began his work as Special Representative in June 2025. He is an experienced diplomat who has been Deputy Director of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom since 2022.

The duties of the UK Special Representative in Kabul include dialogue with the Taliban on UK priorities, including the fight against terrorism, human rights, access to humanitarian aid, and support for talks to achieve inclusive governance in Afghanistan. He is scheduled to work with various groups, including women and religious and ethnic minorities.

Lanzy will also meet with his counterparts in regional countries regarding Britain’s goals.

Representatives of Britain, more than other European countries, have met with the Taliban, especially the foreign minister of this group, in Kabul.
