Investigation Launched Against Special Counsel Jack Smith Over Alleged “Illegal Political Actions”
Former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led investigations into Donald Trump, is now under investigation himself for alleged “illegal political actions” during the probes.

Kokcha News Agency reports that Jack Smith, the former Special Counsel who investigated former U.S. President Donald Trump for alleged interference in the 2020 presidential election and the mishandling of classified documents, is now under investigation. The probe focuses on claims that Smith violated the **Hatch Act**, a federal law that prohibits certain government employees from engaging in political activities.
The Office of Special Counsel (OSC), an independent federal agency in the U.S., confirmed the investigation in a statement. Smith was appointed by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to lead the investigations into Trump.
Smith had filed two federal cases against Trump ahead of the November 2024 presidential election. Trump, during his campaign, had vowed to fire Smith “within two seconds” if re-elected. However, after Trump’s re-election, Smith dropped the cases, and neither proceeded to court.
Republicans have accused Smith of targeting Trump for political reasons, while Democrats claim that the Trump administration is now investigating Smith for political motives.
