Kokcha News Agency – Kazakhstan has embarked on a new and distinct approach to the current situation in Afghanistan by supporting the creation of a United Nations regional hub for sustainable development goals in Almaty. This hub, which is expected to play a central role in coordinating UN development programs in the region, could become a cornerstone of a long-term international strategy to assist Afghanistan.
Yerkin Tukumov, the Special Representative of the President of Kazakhstan for Afghanistan, emphasized the need for global support for Afghanistan during a televised interview. He argued that Afghanistan should not be isolated but rather should be the focus of a systematic international effort to empower its human resources. According to Tukumov, the priority should be on training specialists in critical areas such as medicine, engineering, agriculture, and education—fields that can help rebuild the development infrastructure in a crisis-ridden and war-torn society.
In a holistic analysis, Tukumov stressed that Afghanistan should not be viewed solely through the lens of threat and danger. He believes that a binary approach to the country and attempts to isolate it are not only unproductive but fundamentally ineffective. He spoke of the necessity of integrating security and development in regional policymaking, asserting that engagement with Afghanistan should be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Although Kazakhstan has not officially recognized the Taliban government, it has maintained working relations with the current Afghan authorities. This policy can be seen as a sign of political realism in dealing with on-the-ground developments in the region—a form of pragmatic diplomacy that respects international principles while understanding geopolitical realities and regional responsibilities.
The establishment of this hub could be a turning point for Central Asia, a region facing profound challenges such as poverty, climate crises, and structural instability. If the center can function effectively, it will not only aid Afghanistan but also contribute to the stability of the entire region.
In summary, Kazakhstan, through this new initiative, aims to portray Central Asia not merely as an observer of developments but as an active participant in generating solutions to the region’s chronic crises.
