Taliban Spokesperson Calls on U.S. to Recognize Taliban Like Russia

As the fourth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power approaches, spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid has urged the United States and other countries to recognize the Taliban, following Russia’s recent move to formally acknowledge the group’s government.

Kokcha News: With the fourth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan approaching, spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid has called on the United States and other countries to recognize the Taliban, following Russia’s recent decision to formally acknowledge the group’s government.

Mujahid described Russia’s recognition of the Taliban as a significant achievement and stated that the group has made similar requests to the United States. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday, July 12, that it has officially recognized the Taliban government.

In an interview with Afghanistan’s state-run television, which is under Taliban control, Mujahid claimed that Afghanistan no longer faces a legal vacuum and that the Taliban’s government is fully functional.

CNN reported in July that the Taliban has been actively seeking recognition from the United States. According to the report, efforts to gain U.S. recognition have intensified since the start of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.

CNN also revealed that the Taliban submitted proposals to the U.S. in April, including a request to establish an embassy-like office on American soil to address Afghan-related issues.

The Taliban’s push for international recognition comes amid ongoing concerns about the group’s human rights record, particularly its treatment of women and girls, and its ties to extremist organizations. Despite these concerns, the Taliban has been working to establish diplomatic relations with several countries, including Russia, China, and regional neighbors.
