Explosion at North America’s Largest Coal Plant: One Worker Dead, Dozens Trapped Under Debris

Kokcha News Agency: A devastating explosion occurred at the Clairton Coke Works plant, North America’s largest coke production facility, located in Allegheny County near Pittsburgh. Initial reports confirm one fatality, with dozens of workers injured or trapped under debris.

The plant, situated along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh’s south, has been a cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s industrial identity for over a century. It is one of U.S. Steel’s four major facilities in the state, providing employment to thousands.

Democratic Senator John Fetterman, former mayor of Braddock, described the incident as “utterly tragic” and pledged support for the steelworkers. This comes amid ongoing concerns over U.S. Steel’s $15 billion acquisition deal with Japan’s Nippon Steel, which has faced delays due to national security concerns and political developments.

In February, the Allegheny Health Department reported a battery issue at the plant that led to the accumulation of flammable materials, causing a minor explosion. Two workers were hospitalized but no serious injuries were reported at the time.

Rescue teams are currently on-site, working tirelessly to locate and assist those trapped.
