Taliban Prepares to Mark Fourth Anniversary of Return to Power in Kabul

Kokcha News Agency: The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture has announced that August 15, referred to as the “Day of Victory,” will be commemorated across all provinces with special ceremonies. This date marks the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces from Afghanistan in 2021, which the Taliban views as a historic triumph.

The ministry stated that coordination with military and media institutions is underway to ensure that future generations understand the “value of independence” and remember the “sacrifices of the mujahideen.” The Taliban has also called on media outlets to highlight their “achievements” over the past four years in political, economic, cultural, and military domains.

However, many Afghan citizens and civil activists view this day not as a cause for celebration but as the beginning of an era marked by poverty, unemployment, severe restrictions on women’s rights, suppression of free speech, and single-group rule.

Reports from international organizations indicate that since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, media censorship has intensified, dozens of journalists have been detained or tortured, and severe restrictions have been imposed on women, particularly in the media sector.

Analysts believe that this anniversary will be overshadowed by Afghanistan’s ongoing economic crisis, widespread human rights violations, and international isolation.
