“Kokcha News Agency” – Following the Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, European leaders from the European Union, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Finland have issued a joint statement calling for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The statement, shared by the European Council, highlights the European leaders’ support for diplomatic efforts and security guarantees for Ukraine. It notes that Trump briefed the leaders and Zelensky early this morning on the outcomes of his meeting with Putin in Alaska.
The European leaders welcomed Trump’s efforts to stop the violence in Ukraine, end Russian aggression, and achieve a fair and lasting peace. They also referenced Trump’s statement, “There is no agreement until there is an agreement,” and stressed that the next step should involve a meeting with Zelensky.
The statement declared, “We are ready to work with President Trump and President Zelensky on a trilateral summit with European support.” It summarized Europe’s position as follows:
“We are clear that Ukraine must have firm security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome President Trump’s statement that the US is ready to provide security guarantees. The Coalition of the Willing is prepared to play an active role. There should be no restrictions on the Ukrainian Armed Forces or cooperation with third countries. Russia cannot veto Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO. Decisions regarding its territory are Ukraine’s responsibility. International borders must not be changed by force.”
The statement also emphasized that Europe’s support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia will continue.
Trump and Putin held a three-hour meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, yesterday, with the US leader announcing significant progress but no final agreement.
