Deadly Disease Warning at Popular Tourist Spot in Spain
Authorities in Spain’s Catalonia region have issued a warning to the public after 21% of animal attacks were found to pose a risk of disease transmission, particularly from bats carrying rabies.

Kokcha News Agency – A warning has been issued in Catalonia, Spain, as health officials report that 21% of animal attacks in the region carry a risk of disease transmission, particularly rabies. According to a report in The Mirror, residents and tourists are being urged to avoid all contact with bats, which are the primary carriers of rabies in the area.
Rabies can be transmitted through bites, scratches, or contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) of an infected animal. Health authorities emphasize that in the event of an attack by a potentially rabid animal, the wound should be immediately washed with soap and water, followed by a visit to the nearest healthcare center.
Between January 1 and July 29, 2025, a total of 88 animal attacks were reported in Catalonia, with 22 of them involving bats. While this number is consistent with previous years, the proportion of cases requiring medical intervention due to rabies risk has significantly increased. This year, 63% of reported cases required medical attention due to suspected rabies.
Health officials have stated that individuals attacked by a rabies-risk animal are typically administered a rabies vaccine, followed by a specific vaccination schedule.
As in previous years, the months of June, July, and August saw the highest number of animal attacks, with the majority of incidents occurring during tourist trips, on the streets, or in home environments.
Meanwhile, the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has issued a warning to travelers visiting regions where rabies is prevalent, such as Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. Those traveling to areas with limited emergency medical services or engaging in outdoor activities with potential animal contact are advised to consider getting a rabies vaccine before their trip.
