Kokcha News Agency – Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation via television regarding the protests that have been ongoing for days. Vucic accused the protesters of “terrorism” and claimed that the demonstrations are being organized by the West to destabilize the country.
“The country is in great danger. They are threatening our values and normal way of life,” Vucic stated.
Government Party Buildings Set on Fire
In the capital Belgrade, Novi Sad, and other cities, violent clashes between police and protesters have been taking place for the past five days. On Saturday night, protesters set fire to buildings belonging to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and some of its coalition partners. Police responded with tear gas, and numerous injuries and arrests were reported.
Vucic announced that the state will give a decisive response within a week but ruled out declaring a state of emergency. “The Serbian state will use all available means to restore peace and order,” he said.
What Sparked the Protests?
The protests, which have been ongoing for nine months, escalated into a major crisis after a train station collapse last year killed 16 people, with corruption allegations fueling public anger.
