Kokcha News Agency – Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian, the governor of Tehran, stated that the second phase of expelling foreign nationals will commence this week. He emphasized that this action is being taken to “ease concerns” regarding the presence of unauthorized migrants in the country.
Motamedian noted that half of the foreign nationals in Tehran Province reside in the capital city. Since the beginning of this year, 1.4 million people have been expelled from across Iran, with 450,000 of them being from Tehran alone.
In justifying the expulsions, Motamedian claimed that over 3,000 classrooms have been freed up, and rental prices have decreased by 30 to 35 percent.
Iran has carried out an unprecedented wave of expulsions of Afghan nationals this year. On some days, the number of Afghans expelled through the Islam Qala and Nimruz border crossings exceeded 50,000 people in a single day.
This unprecedented expulsion of Afghans has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations and refugee advocacy groups.
