Fawzia Koofi Calls for Inclusion of Khalilzad in Women’s Conference
Fawzia Koofi, Afghanistan’s first woman deputy speaker of parliament and a prominent peace negotiator, has urged Zalmay Khalilzad to attend a women’s conference to better understand the challenges faced by Afghan women.
Kokcha News Agency: Fawzia Koofi, a renowned Afghan politician, peace negotiator, and advocate for women’s rights, has responded to recent tweets by Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation.
Koofi, who has been a vocal critic of the mismanagement of the peace process, suggested that Khalilzad should be invited to a women’s conference to feel included rather than threatened.
In her statement, Koofi highlighted the dire situation in Afghanistan, where women can no longer gather freely, walk safely in the streets, or speak openly in public due to the erosion of civil and political rights.
She expressed disappointment that Khalilzad, who played a key role in the peace negotiations, is now attempting to delegitimize the few spaces Afghan women have managed to create for themselves.
Koofi emphasized that attending the conference would give Khalilzad the opportunity to see firsthand that his conspiracy theories are baseless.
She urged him to listen to the voices of those who genuinely seek peace with dignity, justice, inclusion, and freedom for Afghanistan, rather than dismissing them.
