Red Cross: Earthquake-Hit Afghanistan in Urgent Need of Aid

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has declared that Afghanistan, struck by a devastating earthquake, urgently requires humanitarian assistance as many families have been displaced and are in dire need of support.

Kokcha News Agency – Following a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake that hit southeastern Afghanistan, the IFRC has issued a statement highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian aid. The earthquake, which struck near Jalalabad, close to the Pakistan border, has caused widespread destruction in the provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman.

The IFRC stated, “Many families have been displaced and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.” The Afghan Red Crescent Society has deployed emergency teams to assess the situation and provide immediate relief to those affected. Ambulances are transporting the injured to overcrowded health facilities, including the Nangarhar Hospital, which is operating at full capacity.

The IFRC emphasized that search and rescue support, emergency health services, food, clean water, and the restoration of road access are among the most pressing needs.

Local authorities have described the earthquake as one of the most severe to hit the country in recent years. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Afghan interim government, announced during a press conference that the death toll has surpassed 800, with over 2,500 people injured.
