Germany to Decide on Sending Troops to Ukraine Once Framework Conditions Are Clear

Kokcha News Agency – During his virtual participation in the Leaders’ Summit of the Coalition of Volunteers, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany will decide on sending troops to Ukraine once the framework conditions are clear.

In a written statement from the Chancellery, Merz emphasized that Europeans are ready to provide strong security guarantees to Ukraine following a negotiated solution with Russia. He assured that Germany would contribute to these efforts.

Merz highlighted that the focus should be on financing, arming, and training the Ukrainian armed forces, stating, “Germany is one of Kyiv’s most important partners in this regard. The federal government is ready to expand this cooperation. Once the framework conditions are clarified, Germany will decide on sending troops at the appropriate time. This also includes the scope of the U.S.’s potential military engagement and the outcome of the negotiation process.”

The Chancellor also stressed that the decision to send troops would ultimately be made by the Federal Parliament (Bundestag).

Merz called for continued efforts ahead of the summit, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to attend. “This summit should result in a ceasefire agreement. If the Russian side continues to play for time, Europe will increase sanctions pressure to enhance the chances of a diplomatic solution,” he said.

Chancellor Merz also reaffirmed Germany’s ongoing support for Ukraine.
