Qatar Calls for Global Support as Afghanistan Faces Economic and Humanitarian Crisis
Qatar’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al-Suwaidi, has urged the international community to continue supporting Afghanistan as it grapples with a severe economic and humanitarian crisis, including unemployment, poverty, sanctions, and the return of refugees.
Kokcha News Agency: At the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Qatar’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al-Suwaidi, highlighted the multiple challenges facing Afghanistan, including economic crisis, unemployment, humanitarian needs, climate issues, poverty, hunger, sanctions, frozen assets, and the return of refugees.
Al-Suwaidi emphasized that these challenges have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and called for sustained global support to rebuild Afghan institutions, ensure access to humanitarian aid, and facilitate dialogue among all Afghan stakeholders to create conditions for peace and reintegration into the global community.
She also announced that Qatar has sent five planes carrying 100 tons of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, reaffirming Qatar’s solidarity with the Afghan people.
This comes after Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, Qatar’s Minister of International Cooperation, visited Kabul to oversee the distribution of aid, marking the first visit by a foreign female official to Afghanistan since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021.
The 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which opened on September 8, 2025, and will run until October 8, 2025, is being held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The session, chaired by Swiss Ambassador Jürg Lauber, includes participation from member states, international organizations, NGOs with ECOSOC consultative status, and national human rights institutions.
