Kokcha News Agency – Wendy Chamberlain, a Member of the British Parliament, has called for the enforcement of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Taliban leaders. Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 24th anniversary of Ahmad Shah Massoud’s assassination, Chamberlain condemned the Taliban’s discriminatory policies, particularly against Afghan women.
She criticized any efforts to recognize the Taliban, stating that legitimizing the group would be a grave mistake. Chamberlain also warned against comments from some Conservative Party members about cooperating with the Taliban to repatriate migrants, calling such actions a betrayal of the sacrifices made by British forces and their Afghan allies.
The MP emphasized that all UK political parties agree on the government’s responsibility to support women and girls, especially in Afghanistan. She described the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 as a tragic and difficult moment.
Chamberlain praised Ahmad Shah Massoud’s legacy, stating that revisiting his work is more important than ever. She urged efforts to achieve the future Massoud envisioned.
Fawzia Koofi, a former Afghan MP, also spoke at the event, highlighting Massoud’s fight for freedom and peace. Other speakers remembered Massoud’s role in Afghanistan’s struggle for freedom and his vision for an independent, prosperous, and inclusive Afghanistan.
The event, hosted by the UK Parliament and organized by the Massoud Foundation, marked the 24th anniversary of Massoud’s assassination by Al-Qaeda in a suicide attack in Takhar Province on September 9, 2001.
