UN Warns: 9.5 Million Afghans Face Severe Hunger

The UN Secretary-General's latest quarterly report warns that approximately 9.5 million people in Afghanistan are grappling with severe food insecurity, with 1.6 million in emergency conditions. The report highlights the devastating impact of funding cuts and the return of migrants on the country's food crisis.

Kokcha News Agency – In a recent quarterly report, the UN Secretary-General has raised alarms over the worsening food crisis in Afghanistan, where 9.5 million people are facing severe food insecurity, including 1.6 million in emergency conditions.

The World Food Programme (WFP) managed to assist 8 million people between April and June, distributing over 50,000 tons of food and $31 million in cash. However, due to funding shortages, the WFP’s capacity has drastically declined, and it can now only assist a maximum of 1 million people.

The report also notes a 60% reduction in programs treating malnutrition among children and women, leaving 1.2 million children under five and around 500,000 women without essential care.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized that Afghanistan’s food crisis has been exacerbated by the forced return of migrants and the suspension of international aid, pushing millions to the brink of starvation and malnutrition.

Afghanistan is currently one of the poorest countries in the world, with millions suffering from extreme hunger and poverty. Earlier reports indicated that Taliban-imposed restrictions, coupled with reduced global aid, have placed the country on the verge of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
