Prominent Anti-Taliban Commander Maroof Gholami Assassinated in Iran

TEHRAN (Kokcha.News) — Maroof Gholami, a senior military commander and close associate of Ismail Khan, was assassinated in his office in Mashhad, Iran, on Saturday. Sources close to Ismail Khan confirmed the killing to Afghanistan International, alleging that the Taliban was behind the assassination.

Gholami was the head of the Council of Jihadi Commanders in Western Afghanistan and had an office in Mashhad. He was a prominent figure in western Afghanistan and played a key role in the anti-Taliban battles during June and July 2021. After the fall of Herat to the Taliban, Gholami, along with other military commanders, sought refuge in Mashhad after 45 days of fighting.

Iranian police have not yet commented on the assassination. However, sources close to Ismail Khan have pointed fingers at the Taliban, accusing them of orchestrating the attack.

Gholami’s assassination highlights the ongoing tensions between anti-Taliban forces and the Taliban, even beyond Afghanistan’s borders. His death is seen as a significant blow to the resistance movement in western Afghanistan.
