UN to Sign Agreement for Regional Center in Central Asia and Afghanistan

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is set to visit Kazakhstan this weekend to sign an agreement establishing a regional center for sustainable development in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Kokcha News Agency reports that UN Secretary-General António Guterres will travel to Kazakhstan this weekend to sign an agreement for the establishment of a UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The agreement will be signed by Murat Nurtleu, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, and Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.

The creation of the regional center was approved by the UN General Assembly and aims to promote sustainable development goals in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN, stated:
“The Secretary-General will emphasize the need to help these countries overcome physical barriers and connect to global markets, including through the use of artificial intelligence to strengthen early warning systems.”

Following his visit to Kazakhstan, Guterres will travel to Turkmenistan to participate in the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries. During his stay in Turkmenistan, Guterres is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the host country’s leaders, as well as other leaders and officials attending the conference.
