Taliban Cuts Off Wi-Fi Internet Access in Mazar-i-Sharif

Residents of Mazar-i-Sharif reported that the Taliban has ordered the shutdown of Wi-Fi internet services in the city, with telecom companies confirming the move as a directive from Taliban authorities.

Kokcha News Agency — Residents of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan reported on Tuesday that the Taliban has cut off access to Wi-Fi internet services in the city. Telecom companies have confirmed the shutdown, stating that it was carried out on the orders of Taliban authorities.

According to locals, both the cable internet services provided by Afghan Telecom and other Wi-Fi internet providers have been disconnected, although mobile internet services remain operational. The Taliban has not yet provided any explanation for the decision to cut off Wi-Fi access.

Telecom companies have stated that they are working to restore internet access for citizens. Sources on Tuesday confirmed that the Wi-Fi shutdown in Mazar-i-Sharif was ordered by Taliban officials.

The move comes amid increasing restrictions on communication and internet access in Afghanistan since the Taliban took control of the country in 2021. The Taliban has previously imposed similar restrictions in other regions, often citing security concerns, though critics argue these measures are aimed at controlling information flow and suppressing dissent.
