Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa Arrives in New York for Historic UN Visit

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly, marking the first visit by a Syrian head of state to the annual gathering since 1967. Al-Sharaa is leading a high-level delegation and has already met with Syrian expatriates in the U.S.

Kokcha News Agency – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in New York on Sunday for what state media described as a “historic visit” to attend the UN General Assembly. This marks the first appearance by a Syrian head of state at the annual UN gathering since 1967, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Al-Sharaa is leading an official delegation that includes several ministers and senior officials for high-level meetings at UN headquarters. The Syrian Presidency, in a post on the social media platform X, stated that during his trip, al-Sharaa met with a group of Syrian expatriates in the U.S.

In the meeting, al-Sharaa emphasized “the importance of their role in conveying the true image of the Syrian Arab Republic” and expressed “his gratitude for their sincere efforts in serving their homeland.”

The visit comes at a critical time for Syria, which has been embroiled in a devastating civil war since 2011. Al-Sharaa’s presence at the UN General Assembly is seen as a significant diplomatic move, as Syria seeks to rebuild its international relations and address the ongoing humanitarian crisis within its borders.

The Syrian delegation is expected to participate in various high-level discussions, including those on regional security, humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of war-torn areas. Al-Sharaa’s attendance also signals Syria’s desire to re-engage with the international community after years of isolation due to the conflict.
