“Yellow-Yellow” Soldiers Return: Is History Repeating Itself in Afghanistan?

As the Taliban tightens its grip, imposing curfews and cutting off the internet, many Afghans are reminded of the Soviet invasion in the 1980s, when foreign soldiers in unfamiliar uniforms entered the country.

Kokcha News Agency: In the 1980s, when Soviet troops entered Afghanistan, the streets were filled with fear, silence, and anxiety. Windows were covered with film or paint to block the view outside, and people were too scared to leave their homes.

Then, suddenly, “Yellow-Yellow” soldiers—foreign troops in unfamiliar uniforms with heavy accents and cold stares—appeared on the streets.

Now, decades later, the Taliban has ordered government employees to stay indoors until Saturday, the internet has been cut off, and the streets are eerily empty. Rumors swirl about Bagram Airfield, Haibatullah, the Haqqani network, and an impending collapse.

The question on everyone’s mind is: Is history repeating itself? Is the “Islamic Emirate” preparing to go underground? Are “Yellow-Yellow” soldiers on their way again?

Those who were children during the Soviet invasion are now the watchful eyes of today. They no longer read history with fear alone but with memory, lessons, and warnings. The past serves as a reminder that Afghanistan’s struggles are far from over, and the people must remain vigilant.
