Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Crisis Reaches Peak Violence; Clashes Spread from Borders to Kabul

The border crisis between Afghanistan and Pakistan has reached a new peak of violence, with Pakistani fighter jets launching airstrikes on Kabul for the first time since 2021. The attacks, carried out in response to alleged cross-border incursions by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from Afghan soil, have resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens of civilians in Kabul and Kandahar.

Pakistan’s Claims and Taliban’s Response
Pakistan claims that the Taliban in Afghanistan have provided shelter and support to TTP and Baloch separatists, allowing them to operate from Afghan territory. The Taliban, however, have denied these allegations and accused Islamabad of failing to control its own territory.

UN Reports Confirm Escalation
United Nations reports confirm that over 65 security incidents have occurred along the Durand Line in the past four years, with five bloody clashes and two airstrikes on Kabul recorded in the second half of October 2024 alone.

Pakistan’s Shift in Strategy
The crisis indicates that Pakistan has abandoned its “strategy of patience” with the Taliban and has resorted to direct military operations inside Afghanistan. This shift could weaken the Taliban’s internal legitimacy and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.

Failure of Security Policies
The Taliban’s reluctance to control militant groups and Pakistan’s insistence on attacking deep inside Afghan territory highlight the failure of both sides’ security policies. This situation risks escalating a proxy war in the region, further destabilizing Afghanistan and its neighbors.

Conclusion:
The recent escalation of violence between Afghanistan and Pakistan marks a dangerous turning point in their long-standing border conflict. With Pakistani airstrikes targeting Kabul and civilian casualties mounting, the crisis threatens to deepen the humanitarian and political instability in the region. The failure of both sides to address the root causes of the conflict risks further violence and a potential proxy war.
