Heatwave in Italy Claims 16 Lives, Triggers Power Outages and Wildfires
A severe heatwave sweeping across Italy has resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people, widespread power outages, and wildfires, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C in southern regions.
Italian authorities reported that the heatwave, which began earlier this week, has claimed the lives of at least 16 people. Six of the victims died while on vacation or working outdoors under the scorching sun.
Additionally, at least 10 elderly people suffering from severe dehydration were hospitalized and later died in hospitals across the country.
Power Outages and Wildfires:
In Rome, the electricity grid has been overwhelmed, leading to continuous power outages. Wildfires have also broken out in several parts of the capital, exacerbating the crisis.
High Alerts and Road Closures:
High alerts have been issued in 18 cities, with temperatures in southern Italy expected to surpass 40°C. The highway connecting Milan and Venice was temporarily closed for several hours due to the extreme heat.
Asphalt Melting:
In many areas, the heat has caused asphalt to melt, prompting road workers to take emergency measures to restore road surfaces.
