Russia Officially Recognizes Taliban Government in Afghanistan
Russia has become the first country to officially recognize the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, marking a significant diplomatic shift since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.

Zamir Kabulov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, confirmed the recognition in an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti. When asked if Russia officially recognizes the Taliban government, Kabulov replied, “Yes, we do.”
Diplomatic Developments:
The Russian Foreign Ministry also announced that Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko met with Gul Hasan, Afghanistan’s newly appointed ambassador to Moscow. Hasan presented copies of his credentials to Rudenko during the meeting.
Taliban Flag in Moscow:
Russian media reported that the Taliban’s flag is now flying at the Afghan Embassy in Moscow, symbolizing the formal recognition of the Taliban government.
First Country to Recognize:
With this decision, Russia becomes the first country to recognize the Taliban government since its establishment following the collapse of the previous Afghan government in August 2021.
After the withdrawal of US and NATO forces from Afghanistan, the Taliban took control of the country and announced an interim government. Most Western countries closed their diplomatic missions in Kabul, leaving only a few embassies operational.
In December 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law removing the Taliban from Russia’s list of terrorist organizations, paving the way for this recognition.
