Two female tourists die in elephant attack on safari
Two female tourists were killed by an elephant in Zambia’s national park, prompting safari guides to shoot and injure the animal in an attempt to stop the attack.
Police in Zambia reported that two tourists, one from the UK and the other from New Zealand, were killed during a safari. Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba identified the victims as 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor, who were attacked by a female elephant with her calf.
According to the police statement, safari guides accompanying the group in South Luangwa National Park opened fire to stop the elephant from attacking the women. The elephant was reportedly injured in the shooting.
Female elephants are known to be highly protective of their calves and can become aggressive when they perceive a threat.
Last year, two American tourists were also killed by elephants in different parts of Zambia, highlighting the dangers of close encounters with wildlife during safaris.
