Ukraine has reported that Russia conducted its largest air attack of the war overnight, launching a total of 550 drones and missiles. Yuriy Ignat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, stated that this was the highest number of drones and missiles used by Russia in a single attack.
The attack targeted the capital, Kyiv, where at least 14 people were injured. The assault also caused significant damage to the city’s railway infrastructure, with buildings and vehicles set ablaze across the city.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 12 of the injured were hospitalized, while two others were treated on-site. Klitschko, in a Telegram post, noted that damage occurred in 10 districts on both sides of the Dnipro River. He added that debris from a downed drone caused a fire at a medical facility in the Holosiivskyi district.
According to the mayor, drone debris also fell on a warehouse and vehicles in the Svyatoshynskyi district, sparking fires there as well. Fires were also reported on the roof and garden of a building in the Solomanskyi district and in a residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
Witnesses reported hearing a series of explosions as Ukraine’s air defense systems attempted to intercept the drones.
Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, announced that the attack damaged Kyiv’s railway infrastructure, causing delays and forcing some passenger trains to be rerouted.
Zelensky’s Response
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, stating that Russia will not stop such assaults without significant pressure. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky said, “For every such attack on people and human life, they must feel the impact of sanctions on their economy, income, and infrastructure.”
Zelensky added, “Once again, Russia has shown that it has no intention of ending the war and terror.”
