According to Kathimerini, the U.S. has significantly militarized the Souda Bay base on Crete, positioning state-of-the-art equipment to safeguard key units.
The base now hosts Patriot missiles along with the U.S.-built M-LIDS (Miniature-Limited Interdiction and Destruction System), small drone integrated destruction systems, and short-range air defense platforms.
These enhancements form part of an extensive defense upgrade aimed at countering threats such as Iran’s ballistic missile launches against Israel.
The report notes that the complex defense arrangements include Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, smaller ships, submarines, and C-17 and C-130 transport aircraft carrying sensitive military equipment, all capable of rapid deployment and protection of vital assets in case of escalation.
Strategic Importance Despite Low Threat Perception:
Although regional attack risks are considered relatively low, Greek defense officials emphasized the necessity of strong countermeasures due to the strategic significance of Souda Bay.
The U.S. forces are also deploying systems like the M-LIDS, which combines electronic warfare capabilities with a 30-millimeter gun to disable drone communications and neutralize aerial threats.
Additionally, the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger short-range air defense system, capable of intercepting drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft, has been stationed there.
The Avengers, managed by the 4th Air Defense Artillery Battalion, accompany U.S. military deployments worldwide.
U.S. Military Presence and High-Level Visits:
While these defense systems are expected to remain in Souda Bay, U.S. forces can mobilize them globally within 48 to 72 hours upon command. The strategic importance of Souda Bay gained further confirmation recently when U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine visited the Marine facilities on the island last weekend.
During his visit, officials from the Sixth Fleet and the Europe-Africa Naval Forces were present, and the guided-missile destroyer USS Thomas Hudner was docked in the port.
This destroyer participated in supporting Israeli forces off the coast of Israel amid recent increased tensions and attacks from Iran.
