Iranian Leader Khamenei Makes First Public Appearance Since Israel Conflict, Attends Muharram Ashura Ceremony
After the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly appeared for the first time, participating in the Muharram Ashura commemorations held at his residence in Tehran, amid heightened tensions and threats from the US and Israel.
Kokcha News Agency reports that Ayatollah Khamenei, who had not attended the first three nights of mourning ceremonies during Muharram, appeared tonight in the Imam Khomeini Hussainiya for the Ashura observance.
Video footage shared on his social media shows his entrance being met with slogans of loyalty, including “The blood in our veins is a gift to our Leader,” by attendees present at the site.
This marks a significant moment, as Iran’s top leader had been absent from public view during the recent conflict.
The war saw threats from then-President Donald Trump and the Tel Aviv government to target Khamenei, including plans to assassinate him, which were publicly announced amid the violence.
Following the ceasefire, Khamenei delivered a televised speech blaming the US for intervening to save Israel and claimed Tehran’s retaliatory actions weakened Tel Aviv.
The Iran leader’s first attendance at the Muharram ceremonies since the outbreak of the conflict underscores his leadership amidst the tense regional situation.
Historically, Iran conducts Muharram mourning ceremonies at Khamenei’s residence every year, but this year’s events marked the first without his participation during the initial nights, highlighting the unusual circumstances of recent months.
