Russian Transport Minister Starovoit Replaced After Alleged Suicide
Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Transport Minister Roman Starovoit, who reportedly shot himself. Andrei Nikitin has been appointed as his replacement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Transport Minister Roman Starovoit in a surprise move, according to a presidential decree. Reports from Reuters, citing the Russian news agency Izvestia, suggest that Starovoit shot himself, though no official reason for his dismissal or the alleged suicide has been provided.
Starovoit, who served as the governor of the Kursk region for five years before being appointed Transport Minister in May 2022, was replaced by Andrei Nikitin, the former governor of the Novgorod region. Nikitin, who previously worked in the transportation sector, served as deputy head of Russia’s federal road agency, Rosavtodor, for six years before entering politics.
The dismissal comes amid ongoing tensions in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched a significant operation against Russia three months after Starovoit’s appointment as minister. His predecessor, Vitaly Savelyev, was appointed deputy prime minister.
The Kremlin has not provided any specific reasons for Starovoit’s removal or the circumstances surrounding his alleged suicide. The sudden change in leadership raises questions about the internal dynamics within the Russian government, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
