Putin: BRICS Surpasses G7 Economically, GDP Reaches $77 Trillion
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that BRICS has overtaken the G7 in economic terms, with a combined GDP of $77 trillion, and highlighted the increasing use of national currencies for settlements among member countries.
In a video address to the BRICS summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) now account for 40% of the global economy, with a combined GDP of $77 trillion in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP). This figure significantly surpasses the G7’s GDP of $57 trillion, marking a major milestone for the bloc.
Putin emphasized that BRICS represents not only one-third of the world’s landmass and nearly half of its population but also a significant share of global economic output, according to 2025 IMF data. He highlighted the increasing use of national currencies for settlements among BRICS member countries, which reduces reliance on the U.S. dollar and strengthens economic sovereignty.
The Russian leader also stressed the importance of continued cooperation among BRICS members in key areas such as politics, security, economics, finance, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian efforts. He noted that the expanded BRICS group now includes leading countries from Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, giving the bloc immense political, economic, scientific, technical, and human potential.
Putin’s remarks underscore the growing influence of BRICS as a counterbalance to Western-dominated economic groups like the G7. The bloc’s expansion and increasing economic clout signal a shift in the global economic order, with BRICS positioning itself as a major player in shaping the future of international trade and finance.
