Taliban Requests Military Equipment from Russia Amid Growing Relations

Kokcha News Agency reports that Afghanistan’s Taliban leadership has officially approached Russia to buy military equipment, marking a significant diplomatic shift after Moscow recognized the Taliban regime. According to a Thursday, July 11, report by the Russian newspaper *Nezavisimaya Gazeta*, the request was made in a letter signed by Taliban Defense Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob.

In the letter, Yaqoob highlighted the Taliban’s interest in acquiring Russian military hardware, describing it as “the beginning of a new phase of cooperation.” He stated that Russian arms meet Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense needs both in quality and quantity, emphasizing that the purchase would be based on “mutual understanding” between the two sides.

The Taliban also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take measures to establish legal and logistical frameworks to facilitate this cooperation. The move appears to be a test of Moscow’s willingness to deepen military ties and support the regime’s new international position.

A source in Kabul, who provided the document to *Nezavisimaya Gazeta*, suggested the Taliban aim to evaluate Russia’s sincerity and long-term commitment by initiating this defense engagement. This step signifies a notable development in Afghanistan’s foreign relations post-2021, as the Taliban seeks new alliances amid international isolation.

However, intelligence reports also indicate internal security concerns. A classified document from Taliban counterintelligence warns that several Russian nationals recently entered Afghanistan under false pretenses—posing as tourists, journalists, or cultural envoys—and are suspected of engaging in espionage activities. This has added a layer of caution to Kabul’s open stance towards Moscow.

While the Taliban welcomes Moscow’s recognition and the prospect of military cooperation, they remain wary of potential security threats posed by Russian operatives. This delicate diplomatic dance illustrates the Taliban’s efforts to forge strategic alliances while safeguarding internal security amid evolving international relations.
