Israel’s Supreme Court Approves Agreement on Shin Bet Director Appointment

Israel’s Supreme Court has approved an agreement between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and the Attorney General’s Office regarding the appointment of a new Shin Bet director, ending a contentious legal and political dispute.

Kokcha News Agency: Israel’s Supreme Court has endorsed an agreement between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and the Attorney General’s Office over the appointment of a new director for the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency. According to The Times of Israel, the court’s decision paves the way for the formalization of Major General David Zini’s appointment, which had previously been deemed improper.

Under the agreement, Netanyahu will submit the name of his chosen Shin Bet director to the appointment committee within two months. Additionally, the Shin Bet is required to provide its contribution to ongoing criminal investigations, including the “Katargate” scandal, during this period.

Restrictions on New Director’s Role
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has barred the new Shin Bet director from participating in the Katargate investigation, citing potential conflicts of interest. The Supreme Court had previously criticized Netanyahu for attempting to remove former Shin Bet director Ronen Bar without proper justification during a period of intense scrutiny over investigations involving Netanyahu’s close associates.

Background on the Dispute
Netanyahu had initially decided to remove Bar from his position, citing a lack of confidence, but the move was blocked by the Attorney General and the Supreme Court. The court issued a temporary injunction preventing Bar’s dismissal and the appointment of a successor, leading to widespread protests and political controversy in Israel.

Bar, who had taken responsibility for the failures surrounding the October 7 attacks, announced his resignation on June 15, stating that the responsibility for the security lapses should be shared by all political and security echelons. Following Bar’s departure, the deputy director of Shin Bet, codenamed “Sh,” was appointed as the interim director.
