Kokcha News Agency – The Syrian Interior Ministry confirmed that recent sectarian clashes in Suwayda have left at least 30 people dead and over 100 wounded. The violence erupted over the weekend and escalated rapidly, prompting nationwide concern.
According to a Reuters report on July 14, 2025, the unrest began after a wave of kidnappings, including the abduction of a Druze businessman on the highway connecting Damascus to Suwayda. This intensified long-standing tensions among local groups.
This is reportedly the first major outbreak of sectarian violence inside Suwayda city itself—traditionally a stronghold of the Druze minority. Authorities stated that over 15 bodies were moved to local morgues, and more than 50 injured individuals were hospitalized.
The Syrian Interior Ministry has deployed forces to the region to contain the unrest and prevent further bloodshed. Officials have not yet released full details about the actors involved or any progress in calming tensions.
In March, over 1,000 people were killed in clashes between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and pro-Assad militias, underscoring ongoing instability years after the civil war’s official de-escalation.
International observers warn that the Suwayda violence may signal deeper fractures in Syria’s already fragmented society. With critical infrastructure lacking and humanitarian needs surging, organizations like the UN have called for immediate mediation and support to prevent further escalation.
