Russia Takes Control of Qamishli Airport in Northeast Syria with Massive Military Deployment

Russia has effectively taken control of the strategic Qamishli Airport in northeast Syria after transferring a large number of troops and military equipment from its Hmeimim Air Base, according to satellite images and field sources.

Kokcha News Agency – Russia has solidified its control over the Qamishli Airport in northeast Syria by deploying significant military forces and equipment from its Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia. This move, confirmed by satellite imagery and field reports, is part of a new agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and aims to redefine Moscow’s military presence in the region.

According to specialized air traffic monitoring websites, Russian cargo planes have conducted over 25 flights between Hmeimim Air Base and Qamishli Airport in the first six months of 2025. The intense activity of Russian cargo planes from January to June this year indicates a large-scale transfer of troops and heavy military equipment to Qamishli.

Syrian sources informed the website “Arm News” that the deployment of Russian forces to Qamishli Airport was coordinated with the SDF as part of a new agreement between the two parties. This development underscores Russia’s strategic efforts to strengthen its foothold in northeast Syria, a region of significant geopolitical importance.
