Lavrov Warns West: ‘Will Not Succeed’ in Defeating Russia Using Ukraine
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the “collective West” of attempting to engineer a strategic defeat of Russia through its support for Ukraine, asserting that such efforts have failed in the past and will not succeed now.

During a meeting with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev on Sunday, June 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the West for its support of Ukraine, claiming that such efforts are part of a broader campaign to undermine Russia. His remarks were reported by the Russian state news agency TASS.
Lavrov stated, “We are witnessing an unprecedented standoff against the collective West, which has once again decided to wage war against us and orchestrate a strategic defeat, primarily through the regime in Kyiv.” He added, “The West has never succeeded in breaking Russia, and they won’t succeed this time either.”
In addition to his criticism of the West, Lavrov emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties with Kyrgyzstan, highlighting the need for regional solidarity amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics. He expressed Moscow’s interest in expanding cooperation across all sectors with Central Asian allies.
Lavrov’s comments come amid escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Western governments have imposed sweeping economic sanctions, provided military and financial support to Ukraine, and sought to isolate Russia diplomatically on the world stage.
The Kremlin continues to frame the conflict as part of a larger geopolitical confrontation between Western hegemony and Russian sovereignty. Lavrov’s remarks reflect a persistent Russian narrative that views Western opposition as part of a historical campaign to undermine Moscow’s influence.
Russia’s renewed outreach to regional partners like Kyrgyzstan signals its attempt to bolster its diplomatic standing and maintain strategic depth in the face of growing global isolation.
