Iran and European Powers Agree to Resume Nuclear Talks Next Week

Iran and the European trio of Germany, France, and the UK have agreed to resume nuclear talks as early as next week, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency.

Kokcha News Agency: Iran and the European trio of Germany, France, and the UK have reached an agreement to restart nuclear negotiations, with talks potentially taking place as early as next week, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency. While the exact date and location of the talks have yet to be finalized, the parties have agreed in principle to resume discussions.

Previous rounds of talks were held in Istanbul on May 16, 2025, and in Geneva, Switzerland, in June. The upcoming talks aim to address the ongoing impasse over Iran’s nuclear program and the potential reinstatement of United Nations (UN) sanctions under the “snapback” mechanism, which allows for the reimposition of sanctions if Iran is found to be in violation of the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA).

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot had previously warned that if no progress is made in the negotiations, the European trio would activate the snapback mechanism by the end of August, reinstating UN sanctions on Iran.

Recent Diplomatic Efforts
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate phone calls with his counterparts from the UK, France, Germany, and the European Union (EU) on July 18 to discuss the nuclear issue. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Araghchi emphasized that the US unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and resorted to military threats during the negotiation process. He stated that a new round of talks would only be possible if the other side is prepared for a “fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial” nuclear agreement.

Araghchi also urged the EU/E3 (European Union and the three European powers) to act responsibly and abandon outdated policies of threats and pressure, including the snapback mechanism, which he argued lacks moral and legal justification.
