Turkey Nearing Deal to Purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoon Jets

According to the American Wall Street Journal, a $5.6 billion deal for 40 Eurofighter fighter jets could be announced this week.

Kokcha News Agency – Turkey is reportedly nearing a deal to purchase Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, according to American media.

The nearly $5.6 billion deal could be announced this week. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Turkey may announce the agreement, which includes approximately 40 Eurofighter fighter jets, at the International Defense Industry Fair in Istanbul.

However, the exact number of aircraft and the size of the agreement are not yet finalized, and negotiations are ongoing. Sources speaking to the WSJ said that the UK Ministry of Defence aims to sign a review and testing plan agreement with Turkey by the end of this year.

The Eurofighter is produced by a consortium of Europe’s three largest defense companies: British BAE Systems, French Airbus, and Italian Leonardo.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also stated in a statement to journalists on the plane upon his return from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, “We are currently taking steps with the UK and Germany regarding the purchase of jet aircraft.

The British and Germans are approaching this positively. I believe we will acquire our jet aircraft as soon as possible.” Erdoğan added, “In my meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, I saw that they viewed the matter positively, and I hope we will take these steps.”

Last week, UK Prime Minister Starmer hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London, and the two leaders were asked about Eurofighter exports.

Merz answered the question, “Are you ready to deliver these aircraft to Turkey?” by saying, “We have not yet made a decision regarding export licenses, but we are moving towards a good decision that will enable or provide for such an export license.”
