Kokcha News Agency: A helicopter involved in extinguishing a wildfire in the Greek capital, Athens, crashed into the sea while trying to collect water. The incident occurred as Greece battles extreme heat and multiple wildfires across the country. All three crew members on board were rescued and transported to a nearby hospital.
According to Euronews, another major wildfire broke out near the city of Corinth in southern Greece yesterday, forcing the evacuation of several villages. Over 180 firefighters, along with 15 planes and 12 helicopters, are currently working to contain the blaze.
The wildfire in Corinth, which started in a mountainous area with pine forests, has not yet resulted in any reported casualties. Greece has been experiencing intense heatwaves, with temperatures expected to remain high until Sunday.
In addition to the fire near Corinth, wildfires also broke out in the regions of Karditsa, Trikala, and Aspropyrgos yesterday.
The Greek Fire Service has warned of a high risk of wildfires tomorrow, particularly in the Peloponnese Peninsula and the Ionian Islands. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has urged the public to avoid activities that could ignite fires in open areas.
