Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated into violent clashes along their disputed border, a region both countries have claimed for over a century.
The conflict has led to the deaths of 15 Thai nationals and one Cambodian, with nearly 100 people injured and approximately 140,000 civilians evacuated from the area.
Cambodia has accused Thailand of shelling the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, an allegation that Thailand has denied.
Meanwhile, Thailand has accused Cambodia of targeting civilians, warning that the clashes could escalate into full-scale war. Cambodia, in turn, has denied these claims and accused Thailand of using cluster munitions against civilians.
The situation has drawn international attention, with Cambodia calling for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
Thailand, however, has opposed this move, with its Foreign Ministry stating that there is “no need for a third country” and that they are ready for direct negotiations.
Malaysia has been suggested as a potential mediator between the two nations.
The clashes began after a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine explosion on the Cambodian border. Thailand responded with airstrikes using F-16 fighter jets, while Cambodia retaliated with heavy artillery fire.
Both sides have accused the other of initiating the violence.
