Denmark to Introduce Mandatory Military Service for Women Amid Rising Security Concerns
In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and increased military spending by NATO members, Denmark is taking steps to strengthen its armed forces by introducing mandatory military service for women. This move marks a significant shift in the country’s defense policy and reflects broader changes in Europe’s security landscape.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted a shift in Europe’s security perceptions, particularly among countries neighboring Russia. In response, many European nations are bolstering their military capabilities. Denmark, a NATO member, is the latest to take action by introducing mandatory military service for women starting July 1, 2025.
Under the new law, all women who turn 18 will be included in the draft lottery system, which has traditionally applied only to men. While Danish law already requires men over 18 to serve in the military, not all are called up due to sufficient volunteer numbers. Instead, a lottery system determines who serves.
Previously, women could only join the military voluntarily. However, the new law, passed by the Danish Parliament on June 11, will make military service compulsory for both genders. Additionally, the length of mandatory service will be extended from 4 months to 11 months. Recruits will undergo 5 months of basic training followed by 6 months of operational training.
Denmark, with a population of 6 million, currently has 9,000 professional soldiers. The country aims to recruit 6,500 conscripts annually by 2033.
Broader European Context
Denmark’s move follows similar steps by other European nations. Sweden introduced mandatory military service for women in 2017, and Norway did so in 2013. These changes reflect growing concerns over regional security, particularly in the wake of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
Russia’s invasion has not only increased tensions but also led to a surge in military spending across NATO countries. Denmark’s decision to expand its conscription system is part of a broader effort to strengthen its defense capabilities in response to these heightened security threats.
