Taliban: Over 9,951 Afghan Prisoners Freed from Iran and Pakistan

Kokcha News Agency: According to the Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees, 9,951 Afghan prisoners have been freed from detention centers in Iran and Pakistan over the past year and returned to Afghanistan. The report states that 9,541 Afghans were detained in Pakistan for lacking residency documents, while an additional 410 were held in Iran on various criminal charges.

Mahmood al-Haq Ahmadi, the head of Policy and Planning at the Ministry of Refugees, stated during a press conference on Wednesday that efforts to secure the release of other Afghan prisoners in Iran and Pakistan are ongoing.

Earlier this year, in mid-Hamal (March/April), the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that approximately 12,000 Afghan citizens are currently imprisoned in Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey.

In a separate announcement, Kalim-ur-Rahman Fani, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Administration for the Ministry of Refugees, highlighted the global challenge of migration, noting that Afghanistan is one of the countries with the highest number of migrants.

Fani mentioned the formation of a high-level commission comprising 22 ministries and agencies to address the issue of Afghan migrants. He criticized neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan and Iran, for initiating the forced deportation of migrants, which he said violates international norms.

The Ministry of Refugees reported that the Islamic Republic of Iran has deported at least 1.8 million Afghan migrants in the past three months. Additionally, 184,459 Afghans have been forcibly repatriated from Pakistan this year.
