Krasheninnikov Volcano Erupts for the First Time in 600 Years Following Major Earthquakes in Russia

Kokcha News Agency reports that the Krasheninnikov Volcano in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula has erupted for the first time in 600 years, becoming the third volcano to become active after a series of major earthquakes in the region. Experts suggest that the volcanic activity may be linked to the intense seismic events.

The eruption comes just days after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings in several areas. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations issued a statement via Telegram, warning residents to stay away from coastal areas despite the expected low wave height.

According to Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team, this is the first historically confirmed eruption of the Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years. The last eruption is believed to have occurred around 1463, with no recorded activity since then.

The eruption produced a massive ash cloud reaching 6,000 meters into the air, nearly four times the height of the volcano itself, which stands at 1,856 meters. The ash cloud is moving eastward toward the Pacific Ocean, with no populated areas in its path. An orange-level aviation alert has been issued, indicating potential risks to aircraft.

The Pacific Ring of Fire, which includes the Kamchatka Peninsula, has been highly active recently, with multiple earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The 8.8 magnitude earthquake earlier this week also triggered the eruption of Klyuchevskoy, Kamchatka’s most active volcano, and led to renewed activity at Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano in Indonesia.
