US Begins Talks with Taliban for Return to Bagram Airbase
The United States has initiated talks with the Taliban to negotiate a limited military return to the Bagram Airbase, as part of broader diplomatic efforts to redefine relations with the Taliban, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Kokcha News Agency – The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that the Trump administration is currently engaged in negotiations with the Taliban to facilitate a limited U.S. military presence at the Bagram Airbase.
Adam Boehler, who recently traveled to Afghanistan with Zalmay Khalilzad, is leading the talks as part of a broader diplomatic package between Washington and the Taliban.
The negotiations, led by Adam Boehler, the U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, are part of a wider set of discussions that include prisoner exchanges, a potential economic agreement, and security cooperation.
The recent comments by President Trump, who unexpectedly mentioned retaking Bagram during a press conference on Thursday, are now seen as part of this diplomatic process. Trump stated, “We want to have that base again.”
Sources from the Wall Street Journal emphasized that the Taliban has not yet agreed to any of these proposals, and everything remains at the discussion stage.
The Bagram Airbase, which was the primary operational hub for U.S. military operations during the war against the Taliban and al-Qaeda, fell into Taliban hands after the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2021.
Now, efforts to return to the base are part of Washington’s broader strategy to redefine its relationship with the Taliban.
