First Chikungunya Case in Hong Kong After Six Years Sparks Outbreak Fears
Hong Kong has reported its first chikungunya case in six years, raising concerns of a potential outbreak. The virus, detected in a 12-year-old boy, has prompted targeted mosquito control measures and a return of some pandemic-era quarantine practices in China.

Kokcha News Agency – Hong Kong has confirmed its first chikungunya case in six years, detected in a 12-year-old boy who recently traveled to Foshan in Guangdong Province. The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, causes severe joint pain and can last for years, raising fears of a potential outbreak in the region.
The boy developed symptoms including fever, rash, and joint pain after his trip to Foshan, where over 6,500 people have been affected by the virus in recent weeks. He is currently receiving treatment in a mosquito-free environment, and his family is under medical observation.
In response to the growing outbreak, some Chinese cities have reintroduced pandemic-style restrictions. Fuzhou in Fujian Province has imposed a mandatory 14-day home quarantine for travelers from Foshan. Meanwhile, Macao reported a chikungunya case last Friday, further fueling concerns about the virus’s spread in the region.
Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has launched targeted mosquito control measures in the area where the patient resides. These include fogging, clearing stagnant water, and distributing public awareness brochures. Although chikungunya is not directly transmitted from person to person, it can spread when a mosquito bites an infected person and then bites others.
Hong Kong’s Strict Virus Measures:
Hong Kong’s stringent measures during the COVID-19 pandemic are still fresh in public memory. The city closed its borders for three years starting in 2020, enforcing travel restrictions, mask mandates, and quarantine camps. During that time, hundreds of thousands were isolated in state-run centers, where harsh living conditions and prison sentences for escape attempts drew widespread public attention.
