Kokcha News Agency: The body of a mountaineer who went missing during a snowstorm in Pakistan in 1997 has been discovered nearly intact inside a glacier after 28 years. The identity card found on the body confirmed it belonged to Naseeruddin, who disappeared in June 1997 while trekking in the Lady Valley.
The discovery was made by a shepherd, Omar Khan, who told the BBC, “I couldn’t believe what I saw. His body was completely intact. Even his clothes were not torn.” Naseeruddin was 33 years old at the time of his disappearance and was trekking with his brother, Kathiruddin, on horseback. The brothers had left home due to a family dispute and reached the Lady Valley that morning. However, after entering a cave in the afternoon, Naseeruddin was never seen again.
Despite hours of search efforts, Naseeruddin could not be found. Nearly 28 years later, on August 1, 2025, his body was recovered from the glacier in remarkably preserved condition. Experts believe the extreme cold and low humidity of the glacier naturally preserved the body, potentially for centuries.
Although DNA testing has been initiated to confirm the identity, Naseeruddin’s family and close relatives immediately recognized him due to the surprisingly well-preserved facial features.
This extraordinary discovery brings to mind a similar incident last year in Peru, where the mummified body of William Stampfl, who had gone missing 22 years earlier on Huascarán Mountain, was found in a glacier.
