Forest Fires Spread Rapidly in Kefalonia and Near Athens Due to Strong Winds
Forest fires on the Greek island of Kefalonia and near Athens in Keratea have forced evacuations as strong winds fueled the flames, prompting a large-scale firefighting response.
Kokcha News Agency – Forest fires broke out on the Greek island of Kefalonia and near the capital Athens in Keratea, leading to the evacuation of several residential areas.
According to the Greek Fire Service, the fire on Kefalonia started in the early hours between Karavados and Peratata, in an area of agricultural and forest land. Strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly, leading to the evacuation of three villages in the region.
A total of 40 firefighters, three pedestrian teams, 12 fire trucks, volunteers, seven planes, and three helicopters were deployed to combat the blaze. Meanwhile, near Athens, a forest fire in Keratea also forced the evacuation of some residential areas. Authorities have urged residents in both regions to follow evacuation instructions for their safety.
