UK and Australia Condemn Israel’s Plan to Occupy Gaza, Warn of Humanitarian Crisis
The UK and Australia have strongly criticized Israel’s plan to fully occupy Gaza, warning that it will worsen the humanitarian crisis and undermine efforts toward peace and stability in the region.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement on Friday, August 8, describing Israel’s decision to intensify its military campaign in Gaza as a “mistake.” He urged the Israeli government to reconsider its plan, warning that it would not end the conflict or secure the release of hostages but would instead lead to further bloodshed.
Australia’s Response:
Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed these concerns, calling on Israel to halt its plan for total occupation of Gaza. She emphasized that the “permanent forced displacement” of civilians would violate international law and worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Wong called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access to the region.
International Law and Two-State Solution:
Wong reiterated Australia’s long-standing position that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace. She stressed the need for Israel and a sovereign Palestinian state to coexist in peace and security within internationally recognized borders.
Israeli Security Cabinet’s Decision:
The Israeli Security Cabinet has already approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to defeat Hamas and seize control of Gaza City. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Israeli military is preparing to fully occupy the area, a move that has sparked widespread international concern.
Growing International Opposition:
The statements from London and Canberra reflect mounting international opposition to Israel’s military strategy in Gaza. There is growing alarm over civilian casualties, mass displacement, and the potential for further regional destabilization.
