Russia to Invite Syria to Russia-Arab Summit in October

Russia is set to invite the Syrian government to the first-ever Russia-Arab Summit, which will take place on October 15 in Moscow. The invitation was confirmed by Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov during a press briefing in the Russian capital. Peskov stated that Russia maintains relations with the current Syrian leadership and will continue to do so in the future.

Russia’s Commitment to Syria

Peskov emphasized Russia’s strategic interests in Syria, saying, “We are maintaining relations with the current Syrian leadership and will continue to do so. We have interests in Syria.” This comes as Russia continues to play a significant role in the region, particularly in supporting the Syrian government amid ongoing conflicts.

U.S. Sanctions on Syria

Peskov also commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to lift certain sanctions on Syria, describing it as a “sovereign decision” by the United States. While Russia has not directly opposed the move, Peskov’s remarks suggest that Moscow is closely monitoring Washington’s actions in the region.

Ukraine Negotiations

In addition to discussing Syria, Peskov addressed the ongoing negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, particularly in light of comments made by U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, who accused Russia of prolonging the negotiation process. Peskov refuted these claims, stating that Russia is committed to resolving the crisis through political and diplomatic means.

“We are grateful to the U.S. administration for its efforts in resolving the Ukraine crisis,” Peskov said. “Now is the time to agree on the date for the third round of negotiations.” He added that all agreements reached during the second round of talks have been implemented, and Russia is not interested in prolonging the process.

“Once all humanitarian agreements are implemented, we will come together and hold consultations. No one is prolonging the process. We want to achieve our goals through political and diplomatic means. Therefore, we are not in favor of extending the process,” Peskov concluded.
