Kokcha News Agency – U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House for a critical summit, with European leaders also present. The meeting, which took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, focused on achieving a ceasefire and discussing security guarantees.
Ahead of the summit, Trump greeted Zelensky at the entrance of the White House. Speaking to the press, both leaders emphasized that the next meeting would be trilateral and expressed their desire to reach a ceasefire agreement.
This meeting follows Trump’s recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which did not yield concrete results. Experts suggest that Zelensky faces a delicate balancing act during his discussions with Trump: he must protect Ukraine’s interests while avoiding alienating the U.S. president. The presence of European leaders is seen as a “balancing factor” in the negotiations.
The summit comes after a tense Oval Office meeting in February, where Trump accused Zelensky of “ingratitude.” However, in recent months, Trump has adopted a more critical stance toward Russia.
During the Alaska summit, Trump and Putin reportedly agreed on “strong security guarantees.” Zelensky’s visit marks his first engagement with Trump since the February incident.
Meanwhile, territorial disputes continue to escalate. A European source told AFP that Trump has shown a “positive approach” to Russia’s territorial claims in Donbas, which Moscow has not yet fully seized. In return, Moscow may agree to “freeze” the current frontlines in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
