US Unveils $175B “Golden Dome”: A Four-Layered Defense Shield Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome

The U.S. plans to deploy its ambitious "Golden Dome" missile defense system by 2028, featuring four integrated layers—one space-based and three land-based—to counter evolving threats, despite unresolved design complexities and a staggering $175 billion estimated cost.

Kokcha News Agency reports:
The U.S. “Golden Dome” missile defense system, inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome but scaled for continental protection, aims to integrate satellite-based detection with advanced ground interceptors. According to a Reuters-exclusive government slide deck presented to 3,000 defense contractors in Alabama, the system’s architecture includes:

  1. Space Layer: Satellite-based missile tracking and targeting.
  2. Land Layers:
    • Upper Tier: Next-Generation Interceptors (NGI) and Lockheed Martin’s THAAD/Aegis systems, including a surprise Midwest missile field.
    • Mid-Tier: Advanced radars and potential laser defenses.
    • Lower Tier: Modular, portable launchers paired with Patriot systems and new radars for rapid deployment.

Key Challenges:

  • Uncertain Costs: Critical components (launchers, interceptors, ground stations) remain undefined, though Congress has approved $25 billion initially, with $45.3 billion sought for 2026.
  • Technical Hurdles: Developing interceptors capable of surviving re-entry heat while targeting missiles during their vulnerable “boost phase.”

Leadership & Deadlines:
General Michael Guetlein, newly appointed to lead the project, must deliver an initial design within 60 days and a full implementation plan (including satellite/ground station specs) within 120 days.
